Our Courses

Age

  • You must be at least 18 years old and not more than 28 years old on the date of selection.
  • The Director-General of Shipping (DGS) sets the age limit for each course.

Medical fitness

  • You must be medically fit for sea services as per the MS Medical Rules 2016.
  • You must be in good physical health.

Education

  • You must have passed the 10th standard school examinations.
  • You must have completed a DG approved GP Rating course or Saloon Rating course.
  • You must have completed the five basic modular courses required for Seamen.

Certificates and documents

  • You must have all original certificates and documents ready for verification.
  • You must have an Indian Passport, PAN Card, Aadhaar Card, and INDOS Number.
  • You must have a Police clearance certificate (PCC) not below the rank of D.S.P.
    • Educational qualifications
      Pass the 10th standard from a recognized board with a minimum of 40% aggregate marks. You must also have passed English with a minimum of 40% marks. 
       
    • Age limit
      You must be between 17 and 25 years old at the start of the course. 
       
    • Medical standards
      You must be physically fit for sea and meet the medical standards set by the Directorate General of Shipping. You must also have 6/6 vision in each eye and not be color blind. 
       
  • ITI course
    You can also be eligible if you pass a two-year ITI course in a trade like fitter, machinist, mechanic, welder, or turner. You must have a minimum of 40% aggregate marks in the final year of the ITI course and a minimum of 40% in English in the 10th or 12th standard. 
  • Academic qualificationsPass the 10th standard from a recognized board with a minimum of 40% marks, including English 
     
  • AgeBe between 17.5 and 25 years old on the day the course begins 
     
  • Medical fitnessMeet the medical standards set by the Director General of Shipping 
     
  • VisionHave normal color vision and field of vision, and a visual acuity of 6/18 in each eye without corrective lenses 
  • Physical fitnessBe physically fit for sea 
  • Academic qualifications
    You must have passed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) as mandatory subjects. You should also have a minimum of 50% marks in English in 10th or 12th standard. 
     
  • Age limit
    You should be under 25 years of age on the date of commencement of the course. 
     
  • Physical fitness
    You should be medically fit and meet the physical standards set by the DG Shipping guidelines. This includes having 6/6 eyesight without visual aids and no color blindness. 
     
  • Sponsorship
    You should obtain sponsorship from a shipping company before joining the DNS pre-sea training

For BE/B.Tech Degree Holders:-

Education:
Must have a BE / B.Tech degree in Electrical, Electronics, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Telecommunication/Communication, or Electronics and Instrumentation with at least 50% aggregate marks in degree.

English Proficiency:
Need at least 50% in English in either 10th or 12th grade. If not, you must have 50% aggregate in your degree exam, provided the degree was taught in English.

For Diploma to BE/B.Tech (Lateral Entry) Candidates:

Education:
Entered BE/B.Tech in the 2nd year through lateral entry after completing a Diploma in the relevant fields with 50% aggregate mark .

English Proficiency:
Need at least 50% in English in 10th grade. If not, you must have 60% aggregate in your Diploma or 50% aggregate in your degree, provided the course was taught in English.

For Diploma Holders:

Education:
Must have a 3-year Diploma in the relevant fields with at least 60% aggregate marks.

English Proficiency:
Need at least 50% in English in 10th grade. If not, you must have 60% aggregate in your Diploma, provided the course was taught in English.

Other Requirements:
Must have completed 10th and 12th from a recognized board.

The degree must be recognized by the government or AICTE.

Maximum 35 years of age at the time of commencement of the course.

Eye Sight:
Minimum Unaided Vision 6/12

Eye Health:
No eye conditions, full eye movement, normal pupil response, good binocular vision. No Color blindness and Color vision tested with Ishihara Chart.

Physical Fitness:
Candidates seeking admission to this Programme must be medically fit and need to produce certificate of medical fitness issued by D.G.Shipping Approved Doctors.

The Medical Fitness Test can also be done with our in-house DGS Approved Doctor, at additional charges.

  • Educational qualification
    You must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) from a recognized board. You must also have scored at least 60% in PCM and 50% in English. 
     
  • Age limit
    You must be under a certain age limit, which varies depending on your category. For example, the maximum age for a male in the general category is 25 years, while the maximum age for a female in the general category is 27 years. 
     
  • Physical fitness
    You must be medically fit and meet the physical standards set out in the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules. You must also submit a Physical Fitness Certificate from a registered medical practitioner. 
     
  • Marital status
    You must be unmarried. 
     
  • Relaxations
    There may be some relaxations for certain categories, such as Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates. 
Educational criteria
  • You must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) as mandatory subjects 
     
  • You must have scored at least 50% in English in 10th or 12th 
     
  • You may be eligible for a 5% relaxation in PCM marks if you are SC/ST 
     
  • You may be eligible for a 5% relaxation in English marks if you are a native of Andaman & Nicobar Islands or Lakshadweep and belong to a recognized Scheduled Tribe 
Physical criteria
  • You must be medically fit and meet the physical standards as prescribed in the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000 
  • You must not be color blind 
Age criteria 
  • You must be under a certain age limit, which may vary depending on the institution and your category
Other criteria 
  • You may be eligible for lateral entry if you have a 3-year Engineering Diploma in Marine/ Mechanical / Electrical / Electrical & Electronics
Education
  • Have a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering, naval engineering, ocean engineering, or naval architecture 
  • Have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical, civil, electrical, or electronics engineering with a concentration in marine engineering 
  • Have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) as mandatory subjects
  • Have scored at least 50% in English in 10+2 
Other requirements 
  • Be under a certain age limit
  • Be medically fit as per the standards set by M. S. Medical Examination Rules, 2000
  • Pass a full eyesight test conducted by a DG Shipping approved medical doctor
  • Not be color blind
